Wood-Destroying Insects

Termite and wood-destroying insect inspection.

This far north, carpenter ants and wood-boring beetles turn up more often than termites do — but the damage looks similar from the outside and costs similar to repair. The inspection covers all of them.

What we actually find

Usually ants, occasionally worse.

Carpenter ants do not eat wood; they excavate it to nest, and they prefer wood that is already damp. That makes them a moisture problem wearing an insect costume, and it means the repair has to address the water as well as the colony.

The inspection looks at the places that go first — sill plates, rim joists, porch and deck framing, anything in ground contact — and at the conditions that invite the problem in: wood to soil contact, firewood stacked against the house, chronic damp in a crawl space.

What you get

Three things this buys you.

Two to three hours on site for a typical property, and the report within 48 hours. If the utilities are off we bring propane and a generator and power the building up rather than reporting it as unverified.

Where we draw the line

We inspect. We do not repair.

Our code of ethics forbids our inspectors from performing repairs, or from estimating repair costs, on a property they have inspected. An inspector who can profit from the problems he finds has a reason to find them.

You get a plain account of what is wrong and how serious it is. A licensed contractor prices and fixes it, and we will come back and re-inspect the work at a minimal fee.
